Welcome to my Photography Gallery
I grew up in Overland Park, Kansas. I'm the son of a businessman/race car driver and a school teacher. My sister, Kira, and I spent our summers going to car races and to the beach at the Jersey shore, where my mom grew up. My dad was never without a camera on these road trip adventures and there was never a barn, lighthouse or historical monument he didn't want to investigate and photograph. He'd bring the film home to develop and print it in his basement darkroom. I observed all of this and slowly became hooked on photography. I took a few photography classes while attending the University of Kansas and learned more about how to observe the world through a lens. Upon graduation in 1990 I hopped on my mountain bike and pedaled to San Francisco, California, where I became a bike messenger....for 13 years. I began documenting bike messenger life in San Francisco and eventually travelled to Canada, Europe and Japan as a vagabond messenger. As I journeyed through various countries and pedaled the streets of San Francisco with a camera in my messenger bag I began to realize I was experiencing something similar to what my dad experienced as an amateur race car driver in the 60's and 70's; I was, as a San Francisco bike messenger, living through and participating in something during its golden era, or at its zenith. The messenger images on this page show my attempt at capturing the essence of the people, clothing, bikes and landscape of the international bike messenger community during the 1990's and early 2000's.
The other photos here are a reflection of my varied interests, including nature, surfing, skateboarding, vintage car racing and street culture.
